Quiet day

It’s our last day in Salcombe, so we have a quiet one. Nice food at the Crab Shed round at the fish quay last night.

Had a potter around town this afternoon. The fuel barge is out of the water for repairs.

Sat on a bench with an ice cream at Whitestrand. Just need to decide where to eat tonight.

Batson round to South Sands

Took our bottles to the recycling at the boat park and continued north along Batson Creek and up into the farmland.
image

The road curves round to the west and soon we’re in the long valley that leads down to South Sands from Malborough. Very quaint.

The wild garlic is trying to invade the path.

Lovely old cottages at Combe.

And once again the South Sands ferry comes to pick us up for the short trip back to Salcombe.

Stats.

Curry night

Salcombe doesn’t have an Indian restaurant, and we fancy a curry. We get the boat across to East Portlemouth and walk north-east along the estuary. Fantastic views.

The road winds around the creeks. Some parts are tidal – impassable at high water. We’re lucky today.
image

After a couple of miles we reach the village of South Pool. Very pretty.
image

Another few miles brings us to a place called Frogmore.
image

From here we catch the bus to Kingsbridge where we have a few beers and a lovely curry.

Hope Cove

Up early this morning and we’re off to Hope Cove in a taxi. Breakfast at the new bar, which is somewhat unimaginatively called ‘The Cove’. Great food though. The tide was out so we can walk along the beach.
image

Up the hill we go. Great views back to the village from Bolt Tail.
image

We continue east,  across Bolberry Down and past Soar Mill Cove. More great views.
image

Some parts of the path are quite steep!
image

Bolt Head, the mouth of the Salcombe estuary.
image

From here it’s all downhill to South Sands, and we can catch the little ferry back to Salcombe.

Needless to say, a computer has kept tabs on the whole thing.

Rain, rain and then…

The forecast was rain today, and so it turned out. We did some washing and caught up with an episode of The Durrells. Popped out for a beer later on and the weather started brightening up.

Got fish and chips and went home for dinner. Stunning views over the anchorage. Taxi is booked for tomorrow morning so it looks like a big walk from Hope Cove.

Salcombe Crabfest

It’s the big day at last, and we’re up early for the Crab Festival. Opening the event is celebrity chef and national treasure Mary Berry. She was brought up in Salcombe.

Lots of crabby stuff, also Salcombe beer.

Lots of lobsters.

Local chefs doing demonstrations, hoping to be the next star of Saturday Kitchen no doubt. The guy on the right cooked our dinner at the Fortescue last night.

Salcombe will soon have its own gin distillery. Here’s one in miniature.

A couple of the local fishing boats pulled up on Victoria quay. Lots to see.

This being Salcombe, there was no free crab; but it was very busy, so fingers crossed this will become an annual event.
