Pie night

Emily and Ali came round for dinner last night, we had pies and chips with green beans and gravy – yum. When we moved into Chalet Iltis there were a few things that needed fixing, including a cracked tile on the terrace. Unfortunately when the tiler came to fix this he found something amiss with the structure beneath the tiles. Today therefore we were up early to greet the following; An architect, a master builder, the tiler and two local builders.

They poked about on the terrace and drilled some holes, and promised to come up with a ‘solution’ in the next couple of months. Whatever that turns out to be, it won’t be cheap. They did assure us however that the terrace isn’t going to collapse any time soon, so we can continue to use it.

It’s been baking hot today, so apart from a trip to the recycling to dispose of last night’s empties we’ve not done much. This evening there’s live music down by the lake at Bönigen, so we’ll pop down to see that.

Männlichen

It’s another lovely day. We meet Beanie for coffee on the Eiger terrace, then head up to Männlichen. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so busy.

Friendly cows alongside the path. Cows can’t scratch their foreheads, so they love it if you do it for them.

We walk around to Scheidegg. It’s very warm even at this altitude.

Now it’s time to spruce up the house a little, because tonight is pie night.

Cooler

Ali had a night off yesterday, so we had drinks at the Caprice followed by the Tanne bar. Rössli the cat has got into the habit of following us home.

Today it’s been a little cooler than of late, so hopefully we won’t get the evening thunderstorms that have been plaguing us recently. We had a run/hike down to Zweilütschinen.

Lots of glacier water in the river.

That might be my last run for a few days; the weather forecast is for very hot weather again.

Let’s not have a barbecue

A barbecue seemed a good idea yesterday, so we went to the Co-op and found prawns and bacon-wrapped sausages, happily both were half price. We were starving by the time we got home, but as I switched on the barbecue there was a solitary blink from its pilot light, and then nothing. Our barbecue was dead. The food cooked well enough in the oven, but it’s not the same.

Noisy this morning – our neighbours are having a delivery.

It’s been a hot, sunny day, punctuated by biblical thunderstorms. Val had her online German class with her mates in the UK, while I went down to Wilderswil to procure a new barbecue.

Queues

It’s a beautiful day, with temperatures in the valley in the high twenties. Our plan was to go over to Mürren where it should be a bit cooler, but the queue for the cable car at Lauterbrunnen was huge, as everyone had the same idea. We therefore jumped on the bus to Stechelberg. The queue to get up the mountain was even longer.

Faced with that, the only remaining option was to have a run along the valley. It was a warm one.

Fortunately the path was quiet, presumably because all the holiday makers were standing in queues.

Up

We haven’t been up the hill on the train since the middle of March, but it’s a nice afternoon so up we go to Wengernalp. Glaciers everywhere you look.

Self service dairy products at the farm.

We amble back towards Wengen. Views to neighbouring Mürren.

We stop for a drink and a slice of cake at Allmend. Wengen in the sunshine.

Body and soul

Yesterday’s rain has passed over, and it’s a glorious day. It was cold enough for snow high up last night, and the peaks have been painted white.

Val had a walk while I was running between Lauterbrunnen and Sandbach. The valley’s looking lovely.

Thought for the day. The sign says that the roar of the waterfall and the gurgling (or something) of the water is healthy for your body and soul.

We were planning a Netflix night this evening, but I’ve just had a message from Andy at the Caprice; they’re having a piano concert on the terrace tonight. Decisions!
