The challenge today is to get from the bottom of the men&#8217;s downhill course to the top as quickly as possible. There are no rules concerning how you go about this as long as you don&#8217;t use anything motorised, but most people use running shoes fitted with crampons&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Competitors congregate in the village.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-1604039309jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-1604039309jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3810 alignnone size-full\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1403\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today however we have a problem. There&#8217;s a big storm up the hill and no trains are going up the mountain, nor are any ski lifts running. The big cloud over the Jungfrau gives a clue to the severity of the storm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-595225846jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-595225846jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3811 alignnone size-full\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1680\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless the race goes ahead on a shortened course to ensure the safety of the racers. We walk to the stadium to see the start.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-1640709107jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-1640709107jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3812 alignnone size-full\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1437\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our next-door neighbour Jana is doing the race with her friend, as are Hayley and Nuala. A gun fires and they&#8217;re off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-358008787jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeeasley.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wp-image-358008787jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3813 alignnone size-full\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1282\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The race today will end at the top of Bumps; this is an ascent of about 500 metres vertical.
