Autumn will soon be here, so it’s time for the first of the cows to come down from the high pastures. The main street in Lauterbrunnen is closed, and the pavements are lined with sightseers.

This herd has spent the summer up at Pletschenalp, which is on the opposite side of the valley from us. Some of the headdresses are quite elaborate.

And off they go. It’s a hugely popular event, and we were lucky to find a table for lunch at the Hotel Oberland.

Not long afterwards the first heavy rain shower arrived. Nice timing for the cows.
