Frau Holle lives somewhere above the Earth. When she makes her bed, loose feathers are stirred up and fall to Earth as snow. So goes the tale from the brothers Grimm. It started snowing while we were in the pub last night and it hasn’t stopped since. We needed shopping so we ventured out this morning.

At 10.30 the trains up to Scheidegg were suspended owing to fears of avalanches.

And at 2pm the entire mountain was closed. The fire brigade put out an appeal via Facebook for residents to clear the snow around hydrants.

The snow looks set to continue for at least another 24 hours.
