Rain

Val was at the hairdresser yesterday afternoon, and afterwards we had dinner at the Eiger. Steaks, absolutely dripping with herby butter.

We popped into Rocks for cocktails afterwards, before setting off for home. Today has been overcast with lots of rain, though I did manage to get up to the village this morning without getting a soaking. There are 100 very wet sheep in the meadows below us, and they have my sympathy.

Stechelberg

It’s a warm day, and we had a short thunderstorm this morning just as I was walking back from the Co-op. Just before lunchtime, we got the bus along the valley to Stechelberg. The road ends here – if you want to go further there are many walks, but no more public transport.

Stechelberg is very pretty, and it’s deservedly popular with walkers and cyclists.

We couldn’t resist lunch at the restaurant.

A short walk away is a small hydro-electric power station with a nature reserve. We spot tadpoles in the pond.

There are also large numbers of dragonflies, in particular these vivid blue ones. Subsequent research indicates they are common blue damselflies.

A nice day out. There’ll be more thunderstorms this evening. Our challenge is to get up to Rocks without getting soaked.

Technical changes

Apologies for the lack of updates on these pages for the last week or two. I’ve been moving all my stuff to a new internet host, and it’s taken a little time to get 15 years worth of photos and commentary across. Normal service will soon be resumed.

We’re in the U.K. until next week, more Swiss stories coming soon!

Grindelwald

It’s a lovely day. David has started his ice cream business on the Eigerhubel.

We’re off to Grindelwald. The cable car is open now, so we can go ‘over the top’. Our swimming pool is open for the summer. Not many swimmers today, as it’s a bit cold.

Up at Männlichen there’s still a lot of snow. The walk to Scheidegg won’t be open for a few more weeks.

We met Val’s colleague Will for a drink at the Avocado bar. Lovely in the sunshine.

Later on we had burgers at the Memory Bar, and headed back to Wengen. Super afternoon out.

Neuhaus

Yesterday we had an afternoon out. We caught the bus to a place called Neuhaus, which is on the shore of Lake Thun. Very picturesque.

The steamer calls here, but it’s still low season, so there are just a couple of sailings per day.

Lots of watersports going on.

We sat at the cafe on the quayside and shared an enormous ice cream, before catching the bus back to Interlaken. There’s a Mexican restaurant that we’ve had our eyes on, so we thought we’d give it a try. Very nice food, and a very relaxed atmosphere. We’ll be back.

We had a slow day today – it’s still very warm even up here in Wengen.

Lauterbrunnen

We pass through the village of Lauterbrunnen several times a week, but rarely spend any time there. The same goes for the majority of visitors; Lauterbrunnen is merely a place where you change trains on your way to Wengen or Mürren. This is a shame, as there’s a lot to like about the village in the valley, particularly in summer. Glimpses of the Staubach waterfall are never far away.

The train departing for Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg.

Views to the Jungfrau, which towers over the valley. The summit is more than 2 miles above us.

The village swimming pool opened today.

We got lunch from the bakery, and had a nice wander around in the sunshine. Here’s that waterfall again.

Back in Wengen, the Eiger restaurant has reopened for the summer season. We got a nice shady table on the terrace and shared a huge ice cream.
