Windy, very busy

It’s the first properly nice day for a while, so we headed up the hill this morning. The train was quiet, and we had high hopes for a good morning on the slopes with plenty of skiing. It wasn’t to be. Things started well enough.

Unfortunately, a strong wind from the south caused the closure of one of the main chairlifts, meaning that all the skiers were confined to an area of about half the usual size. This led to huge queues.

We had a long break for coffee, hoping that the wind would subside. It didn’t, so eventually we headed back to Wengen. Val has her yoga class this afternoon, so we didn’t really mind being back a bit early.

Foggy

The weather’s not great, with snow showers and fog. We had a long coffee break at the restaurant Eigernordwand at Scheidegg. Team photo outside.

After coffee we all disappeared in different directions (In my case, to the Co-op). Jan and Val had a few runs, followed by drinks in the Hütte.

Here’s hoping for an improvement in the weather.

Half an hour of sunshine

As usual on a Sunday, we went to the Alpine Hotel yesterday evening. Ollie and Stella behind the bar knew it was my birthday.

This morning we headed up to Männlichen for a ski. The weather’s a bit gloomy, but the crowds have gone and for maybe half an hour the sun put in an appearance. We had a really good run down the hill.

We had a coffee break and headed home for lunch. Lots of chamois under the cable car on the way down.

Happy birthday to me!

Another year has gone by, and I have another nice row of cards above the fireplace.

The Barrs and Venns arrived last night, we popped up to Männlichen to join them for lunch.

It was sunny up at the top, but a biting wind kept us cool while we were outside. Busy too with the weekend crowds.

Uptown Lights later on at the Alpine Hotel.

Cold!

Cold air isn’t only useful for chilling beer. It can also turn water into snow. For the first time in weeks, the snow cannons were running this morning.

We had a nice walk down in the valley after lunch. We came back up on the new ‘Wengen Shuttle’. These new trains are very nice, and they mean that we now have a service from Lauterbrunnen every 15 minutes during peak times.

The ski racing this weekend is taking place in America. The time difference means that we can stay at home and watch it this evening.

Beer o’clock

Last night we started with a beer in Rocks, followed by a lovely dinner at the Eiger. We followed this up with cocktails back at Rocks. On our way home we could tell that the weather was beginning to change, and sure enough, not long after we got home, the wind was howling. This morning there was fresh snow above the village and it was much, much colder. Nice clear air gave us very good views along the valley (remember, you can click or tap the pics to make them bigger).

We spent most of the day in Interlaken having lunch and shopping, but we were glad to get home out of the cold wind. The chilly weather has, however, fixed my beer problem. By 9 o’clock this evening the north wind had chilled my Heidelberg beer to perfection.

Tomorrow is Saturday, and many of the holidaymakers should be leaving. It’ll be nice to have our mountain back.
