Sunshine!

It’s a lovely day – cold, and not a cloud in the sky. We’re off up to Scheidegg. At the top of the Lauberhorn.

Have you ever met anyone from Uraguay? No, me neither, until today anyway, when I met Macca who is working at the Eigernordwand restaurant, and Nico, who is working for Val’s ski school.

It was a good fun day up the hill, with lovely snow. It seemed like every five minutes we bumped into someone we knew. Top stuff.

Gloomy but good

A good evening out with Beves and Ibe at the Alpine Hotel last night.

It was a bit murky when we got to Scheidegg this morning, which was an excellent excuse for starting with a coffee. Things did improve though, and in the end we had an enjoyable ski. After a very busy weekend, it was much quieter today.

Not much more to report – Val’s at physio this afternoon, and her usual Monday evening Pilates class has been cancelled, which means I have enough time to peel some potatoes for chips.

Valley walk

It’s cold, but the sun’s out. Every train going up the hill is packed, so we employ our usual tactic and go in the opposite direction – down to the valley. We had lunch at the Airtime cafe and had a walk along the path where I do my running in summer.

At this time of year the valley gets very little sun, so temperatures stay very low. The waterfalls cover the cliff faces with ice. Every few minutes there’s a loud crash as lumps of ice fall to the valley floor.

Wengen, by contrast, gets more and more sun as winter wears on.

A nice walk. Uptown Lights at the Alpine Hotel this evening.

Successful beer run

We had a big party for James’s birthday in Rocks last night. We didn’t eat before we went out, as we knew there’d be an enormous amount of cake and other treats. We weren’t disappointed. There are lots of kids in Wengen at the moment, and while we were in Rocks they had a race on the nursery slope. The floodlights illuminate the forest beautifully.

Val was out early this morning for her final gym session before she starts work again. I need beer, so I followed her down a couple of trains later. The Co-op had a lovely big pile of trays of beer. I brought one home in the shopping trolley.

That’ll keep me going for a couple of weeks.

More fog

It’s been very cold and foggy for the last couple of days. Last night we trekked up to Rocks and enjoyed a few beers, before dining at the Eiger. Once again we had ribs – huge portions and absolutely delicious.

We’ll be out again tonight, as it’s James’s birthday.

Another day, another bar

It’s another nice day, so we’re off to Scheidegg again. Great skiing, particularly if you plan a route that keeps you in the sunshine.

There’s another new bar at the station, so we thought we’d give it a try at coffee time.

It’s called the Corner Bar, and it’s very nice. The cakes looked delicious, but it wasn’t long until lunchtime so we managed to resist. Colin will be playing at the Alpine Hotel later, so we’ll have a stroll up to the village for that.

Sun!

It’s looking like a good day, so we’re off to Scheidegg. Enjoyable skiing; cold, but good visibility. Val turning on the style.

We had a good ski and bumped into Val’s colleague Ryan a couple of times, before grabbing a late lunch from the bakery in Wengen. We had a late dinner too, as we were watching the ski racing from Austria on telly. Fingers crossed for more nice weather tomorrow.

The cyber attack on the Royal Mail and their current inability to send international parcels is proving a bit awkward, so if anyone’s coming out in the next few weeks, perhaps you could give me a shout.
