More work

Val’s lesson today started at 12, so at least she didn’t have an early start. It’s not a bad day, there was a little hazy sunshine at the top.

It’s still very busy. Tobogganing is always very popular over the holidays.

New Year’s Eve tonight, we usually stay up and watch Jools Holland on telly. I wonder whether anyone will last until that late.

Interlaken

Val had a marathon 3 hour lesson this morning. Lots of people about.

As you can see, the weather’s a bit gloomy. Masks are required for skiing on the nursery slope now, and skiers arriving back from Scheidegg are greeted by a big sign.

This afternoon we popped down to Interlaken to get the things we need for our New Year’s Eve get-together tomorrow night. It was very cold, even down there, and we were glad to be back on the train.

Gloomy, snow

Not much to report today. Val had work as usual, though she thinks she might get a day off tomorrow. The tennis courts are being used as a holding area for skiers waiting to use the Männlichen cable car. It seems to work well.

Of course queuing outside is not so nice if it’s snowing, which it is at the moment. It’s been gloomy all day – at least when it’s snowing we know the skiing will improve.

Leftovers dinner

We thought we’d finish all our Christmas leftovers last night, but even with help from Colin and Ali we were still left with some mince pies. The Christmas pudding was good though.

This morning Val was off to work again. Piste machines going out for the day at Scheidegg. These things smooth the snow to make skiing easier, and they cover any bare spots that begin to appear on busy stretches.

The shops are open again, so I popped up to the Co-op. I was early, but I still had to queue to get in, as the whole village was stocking up with stuff after 3 days without any shops.

Lots of people tobogganing at Allmend. The portacabins in the background are at the top of the World Cup slalom run. The races begin in a couple of weeks time.

Quiet Sunday

Val was off up to Scheidegg at the crack of dawn this morning for work. Amazing skies. What you can’t see is the temperature – it’s a chilly minus 6.

At home I cleared all the snow from the terrace. There’s another storm coming tomorrow and I don’t want to let it get too deep.

Val finished work at lunchtime and got this shot of Allmend restaurant on her way back to the village.

The restaurant is closed of course, but it’s still a nice spot to eat your packed lunch.

Our last 2 dinners have been leftovers from our Christmas dinner, and tonight we’re going to try to eat all the leftover mince pies and Christmas pudding that we couldn’t manage last time around. We’ll need some help with that.

Busy Boxing Day

Boxing Day is usually our biggest day of the season for arrivals, and everyone is wondering what will happen this year. It’s certainly busy in the village, and ski school have some customers.

The Figeller bar has plenty of drinkers. They can only do takeaways but as they don’t really have an indoor space it doesn’t make much difference.

Here come the kids!

We had a lot of snow yesterday, but still the snow cannons roar.

We lose the sun just after 3 at this time of year, and suddenly we are plunged back into the freezer.

Later on at the station, everyone is curious to see how many visitors arrive. Quite a few as it turns out.

Merry Christmas

Last night, thanks to some sterling work by everyone, we had a super Christmas dinner at chalet Iltis.

Our joint of pork, with far more roast potatoes than we could possibly eat.

Ali’s Yorkshire puddings were a triumph.

Emily made delicious glühwein.

At last we can eat.

Later on it was time for secret Santa. Everyone got something nice.

While we were eating and making merry it was snowing outside, and the snow has continued all day today. Merry Christmas everyone!
