Lovely weather

Val went to the hairdresser yesterday evening, so I went curling with Ally and some of her guests. Great fun.

Beautiful day today, so up we went to Scheidegg.

We hooked-up with Colin and Ally and had a blast round the mountains. With no stops for coffee or lunch we covered a lot of ground. At Eigergletcher.

Sun lighting up the chairlift covers.

We had a beer at Allmend on the way home. Super day.

After the rain

Here’s the cause of all the trouble yesterday – a landslip across the railway track just below the village.

It stopped raining sometime in the early hours of this morning. Transport-wise everything is back to normal. We pop up to Männlichen to see what’s happening.

It’s a bit gloomy but the skiing is ok. Very few people around. Dramatic sky above the partially buried berghaus.

The sun kept trying to peep through the clouds, but it was fighting a losing battle. Down in the valley there’s another layer.

Rain

We had a good evening out at Rocks last night and came second in the quiz. While we were having fun the snow turned to rain. This continued all night. Rain is bad, and we weren’t surprised to find that Wengen was marooned this morning – no trains in or out of the village owing to a rockslide.

Up at Scheidegg it continued to snow of course. The tracks were covered in a metre of the stuff by this morning.

The rain continued all day in Wengen. Needless to say there’s been no skiing, though Männlichen cable car did open for a while. It’s not a day for going out at all, but I’ll have to take all our accumulated cardboard out at some point as it’s the monthly recycling day tomorrow.

Snowstorm

Wengen is in the grip of a huge snowstorm. High winds at the top mean no skiing. Not to worry, there’s lots of skiing on telly and we cheered Dave Ryding on to a creditable 9th place in the world cup slalom at Kitzbühel.

We had to pop out to buy something for dinner.

Now that we’ve got Christmas, New Year and Lauberhorn out of the way we can start having our quiz nights in Rocks. Hopefully a few people will brave the weather and join in.

Improving

It was snowing hard when we got up this morning, but the stormy wind has gone which is nice. We had a walk down to the little hamlet of Wengwald after lunch.

Great views up the valley towards Stechelberg.

And back up the hill to Wengen and the ski area. Val is feeling a bit better today so tonight we may pop out for a drink for the first time since Sunday.

Storm – day 3

Here we go again. Everything’s closed at Männlichen and the train to Scheidegg is severely limited by the wind. This is a big headache for ski school as the kids still need to be kept amused (adults have the sense to stay indoors).

These 2 instructors have joined their classes together and are having a parallel slalom competition on the nursery slope in the village.

The forecast is a bit better for tomorrow, so fingers crossed.
