A lovely day for a ski

After all the dreary weather we’ve been having it was very nice to wake up to blue sky and sunshine this morning. We headed up the hill. Super views from Männlichen.

The snow was very good, and it’s not busy. This spot is called Tschuggen bowl.

It was one of those days when we almost felt we could ski forever. We can’t unfortunately, as Colin is cooking tonight and I’ve promised I’ll make a large quantity of chips.

Civic improvements

The fence alongside our path has a hard life, particularly during winter when the snow is cleared by machines. It’s time it was replaced.

We’re off to Interlaken. We both need shoes, and I need to visit the Swisscom shop. It’s cold, and getting colder, so Val can try out her new jupe for the first time.

Grey, or gray?

Apparently the spelling of this word depends where you live, but I grew up with ‘grey’ so I’ll stick with it. However you spell it, it provides a good description of the weather this morning. It was snowing too, just to add to the gloom.

We had a bumper dinner last night. Hirsch (small deer) with mash, carrots, red cabbage and chestnuts in caramel sauce.

We needed to go up to the village, and fortunately the sun put in an appearance. Wengen is grey no longer.

A bit of everything

The weather’s changing. So far today we’ve had sunshine, snow and light rain. There’s still masses of snow in some of the gardens.

The nursery slope’s still good too.

The snow’s a bit thin where the village run crosses the path, but this girl’s going to risk a few scratches on her snowboard.

My turn to cook tonight.

Busy Saturday

Saturdays are always busy. Lots of tourists are leaving, lots more arriving. Weekenders from Bern come to visit their holiday homes, and, if the weather’s nice, thousands travel from all over northern Switzerland just for the day. Today was no exception. It was crazy up the mountain, and even the Co-op was under siege.

In a further sign of spring, the first seasonal products are beginning to appear in the shops. We got some sausages made with wild garlic which were delicious.

British weather

Emily came round early yesterday evening and started cooking. She made a very impressive chicken and chorizo jambalaya, it was absolutely delicious.

After we’d finished playing Yahtzee (Ali won, beating me by 3 points) it started raining. By this morning the rain had turned to snow. Not useful snow you understand, but the British type that hits the ground and instantly melts. We popped down to Interlaken where it was pouring with rain, got our shopping and headed back to Wengen. It’s still snowing now, and there’s still nothing to show for it on the ground. Things should be better higher up the mountain. Fingers crossed.

Nice morning

Val had her German class this morning, and I headed up to the village and did my usual route. I start at the recycling centre, then the post office, followed by the Co-op and finally the dorflade (village shop) where they sell my favourite beer. It was a lovely morning. It’s amazing how many more smiling faces you see when the sun’s out.

Val was at the hairdresser this afternoon, and I ran the hoover around. Emily’s turn to cook tonight.
