Busy

It’s another beautiful day, but no skiing for us as we’ve got things to do. Val had her German class just before lunch, so I went up to the village and got the shopping. Wengen is beginning to come to life. The Sunstar opened today.

The council have cleared most of the snow and ice from the paths now, and the warm sunshine keeps them dry. It’s nice to be able to wander around without wearing crampons everywhere. This is the view from the top of our path.

After lunch we popped down to Lauterbrunnen to ask the bank to order some debit cards, and then we cleaned the house from top to bottom as it’s Colin’s turn to cook tonight and we’ll have a house full of hungry people.

Ski testing

It’s time for a new pair of skis. This presents a problem, as there are at least a dozen big manufacturers, and they all offer a range of different skis. Where on earth to start? Fortunately we have a test centre up at Männlichen where you can try as many different ones as you like. I tried 3 pairs today. All were good, but none of them had the ‘wow’ factor that I was looking for. Anyhow, it was a lovely day.

We’re busy tomorrow but I’ll try some more on Friday. After skiing we had a few beers with Emily and Colin, and now it’s time to cook dinner.

Gloomy föhn

In contrast to the weather yesterday, today we have a föhn wind blowing, and it’s cloudy and damp. We need stuff from Interlaken anyway, so it’s a good excuse for lunch at the Cafe de Paris. It feels much colder than it is, and after grabbing our shopping we were grateful to climb aboard the train home. Hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow.

Here’s my bouillabaisse. Absolutely delicious.

Back in the village the snow, which is turning to slush, is being cleared.

Up the hill

It’s a nice morning, mild, with the sun trying to get through the passing clouds. Up we go to Männlichen.

We skied down to Holenstein and had coffee when we got back to the top.

Then it’s round to Scheidegg.

It’s very quiet, with no queuing anywhere.

From Scheidegg we skied back to the village and had a late lunch. Pub later.

Foggy

It snowed all night, and today the village has been shrouded in thick fog, which often happens after a snowfall. Just as well we’d planned to have a day at home then. Val has been wrapping Christmas presents, and we’ve ordered some decorations. New measures to combat the virus mean that all bars and restaurants are closed on Sundays now, so we’ll be having a quiet evening in front of the telly.

Snowy Saturday

Last night we had a few beers in the Waldschluecht and then onto Sinas’s for a lovely dinner. The food in here has been so-so for a few years now, but they’ve either got a new chef or a new butcher, or possibly both, because now the food is really good.

Today started cloudy and it started snowing at lunchtime. This continued all afternoon. We went down to Interlaken where it was raining, and managed to buy something we’ve been looking for ever since we moved here – a proper gravy boat.

Dinner

Rachel, Bob, James and Julie came for dinner last night. It was a very jolly evening, requiring me to make two trips to the recycling centre this morning.

This morning Val was up early. Pink sky over Wengen usually means snow is on the way.

She was off to Brienz to see her dentist again. It’s snowy all the way down to the lake.

You’re not allowed to ski in the street in Wengen, but some people don’t seem to have received the memo.

It’s Friday, so pub later followed by a slap-up meal at Sina’s.
