The long run

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for this week’s long run. It’s cool, dull and the forecast is rain. At least the temperature means I can run in the valley. Livestock everywhere now.

The Staubach waterfall marks the end of today’s effort, and we managed to get it all done before the rain came.

Sefinental

Scorcher today, and I’m due a run. We head over to Winteregg and I run to Mürren, while Val walks not far behind. From here we can begin a walk back to Stechelberg at the top of our valley. Mürren humour.

It’s quite a hike down to the valley floor – about 6 miles, in a valley called Sefinental. As we descend, others are on their way up to the high pastures.

Eventually we reach Stechelberg, where the bus will pick us up for the trip back to Lauterbrunnen.

Uptown Lights are playing at the Caprice later.

Giessbach

It’s another lovely day, and we’re off to lake Brienz. We catch the old paddle steamer ‘Lötschberg’ from Interlaken Ost, and it drops us off at a place called Giessbach.

From the lake shore there is a funicular up the mountain. We decide to walk – we’ll spend the fare on ice creams at the top. Eventually we reach the Grand Hotel Giessbach.

The hotel, however, is not our objective today. We’ve come to see the famous waterfalls.

We walk up the hill alongside the falls.

At one point we were behind the water.

We got thoroughly soaked, but the falls are truly impressive. They tumble 500 metres down the mountain before crashing into the lake.

We enjoyed our ice creams, and ambled back down to the lake where the steamer ‘Jungfrau’ picked us up for the trip back to Interlaken.

Run Mike, run!

It’s hot and sunny, so we head over to Mürren where it should be a bit fresher up at 5300 feet. The path to Grütschalp hasn’t long opened after winter, so it’s in a bit of a state after all the snow. Repairs are scheduled next week.

There’s still snow in the gullies up here.

Despite the heat, the tourists and the potholes I flew along the path and it’s my fastest 5k of the year by quite some margin. I’ve no idea why it’s so much easier to run here than in the UK, maybe it’s the scenery.

We have our bakery back

Last autumn the people who ran our village bakery retired, and the bakery closed. Of course you can buy bread and pastries in the Co-op, but everyone missed the bakery. Happily it re-opened today. Last night the new owners held an apero, and the leftovers found their way into Rocks.

We ate some with our drinks and kept a couple for lunch on our walk today. Just below Wengernalp.

It’s a bit cloudy, but we get occasional views of the peaks.

Back in the village, the bakery people are making pizzas in an oven in the street. They’re doing a roaring trade.

Hello summer

After all the wet, cold weather in the UK it was very nice to arrive in Wengen yesterday afternoon to find the village bathed in warm sunshine. This morning it was warmer still, so after shopping and lunch we headed down to Lauterbrunnen for some exercise. There’s still a lot of snow up in the mountains, so the waterfalls are spectacular.

Val walked along the valley while I ran. We were almost at the end of the path when I eventually caught her.
