A long day out

The weather looks good, so we head up the valley to Stechelberg and walk up to Trachsellauenen. Curious goats.

We stopped for a coffee at the little restaurant and headed uphill. That lump of rock behind Val is the west face of the Jungfrau.

One of the routes to the summit begins here. There’s a small shrine commemorating some of those who didn’t return.

There are very few people around up here, and this donkey seemed very pleased to see us.

The Breithorn glacier above us.

The view back down the valley. You can just about see Wengen.

It’s a good walk, and a great way to burn a few calories.

Around Interlaken

It’s still pretty chilly in the village, so we catch the train down to Interlaken where it should be a bit warmer. Our walk takes us along the river that connects the lakes. We arrive at Neuhaus on lake Thun.

Still a few boats in the water, but most have been hauled out for winter.

We walk along the lake shore. Autumn colours.

The steamers are still running, and very popular on a sunny day like today.

Eventually we get back to Interlaken where we catch the train home.

Quick trip to Männlichen

The cold weather continues. All our winter clothing is packed away down in the cellar, so we pile on as many layers as we can and head up to Männlichen. Views down to Grindelwald.

Top of the new nursery slope tow.

Despite the snow, work on the new gondola continues.

We had a coffee in the Berghaus where it’s warm and dry. Views to the north.

The last dry day

The weather forecast for the next few days is awful – we’re expecting rain this evening and this will turn to snow tomorrow. It’s a good idea therefore to get a run in today, so we headed down to Lauterbrunnen. It’s cloudy, but we did get a few rays of sun. Val got a lovely shot of the Staubach waterfall.

Lots of cows down here for the winter. When the snow arrives they’ll be taken into barns.

My run was a bit scrappy, but not too bad.

I stopped at the campsite to get weighed. Another 3 kilograms have gone.

A quiet day

Last night was the start of the annual Oktoberfest down at the Hüsi at Interlaken, so we jumped on the train with Ali. Uptown Lights are playing. We met Nik and Ben from Grindelwald and settled down to a feast of spare ribs before the music began.

Ibe photobombing our picture.

The party went on long into the night, and we missed all the trains and busses back to Lauterbrunnen (the same thing happened last year), so we ended up in a taxi which cost us more than we paid for dinner. Top night out.

Needless to say today was a quiet one.

Sefinental

Really good run this morning with a new personal best of 31.24 for the 5 kilometres between Mürren and Grütschalp.

We stopped for sandwiches, then set off to walk the Sefinental which leads back to the valley. The views are incredible.

Further down there are still some cows waiting to be walked down to their winter homes.

We walk on through the forest, eventually emerging high above Stechelberg.

At the bottom a bus is waiting to take us back to Lauterbrunnen.
