Paul & Sally arrived yesterday afternoon. Paul hasn’t skied for a few years so we popped up to Wengernalp for a refresher.
No problem at all, and this afternoon we were cruising down Männlichen enjoying the sunshine. It’s a beautiful day.
Quiz time last night, and we had a big turn-out with 9 teams. We employed our usual tactic and assembled as big a team as we could, and at last we got back to our winning ways.
From left to right we have Erin, myself, Sian, Rosanna, Ozzie and Val. Prosecco all round.
While we were racking our brains in Rocks it started snowing outside, and this continued all night and most of today. Hardly anyone went skiing, and those who did were mostly back in the village by lunchtime. Later this afternoon we had a few glimpses of sunlight down here, but it stayed murky and cold up the mountain.
It’s sunny but very cold this morning, so we head over to Murren which faces the sun early in the day.
Lots of jumpers at a place called Schiltgrat. It’s hard work getting enough lift from the canopy.
When the sun disappears around the mountain the temperature takes a dive. Cruising home at the end of the day.
It was snowing at breakfast time, but the sun put in an appearance for the first time for about a week later on. Up the hill we had a mixture of sun and snow, sometimes both at the same time.
Lovely views when the sun did peep through though.
The Swiss kids are back at school tomorrow, lots of families enjoying the last day of the holiday.
Kids on Bumps lift. There’s usually a race for them on a Sunday.
Some years ago we rented rooms in a farmhouse about 20 minutes walk from Wengen. Our taxi could only get to within a few hundred yards of the farm, and we were met by the farmer and his wife who dragged our luggage up the hill on a huge sled. Nowadays they’ve largely been superseded by 4x4s and tracked vehicles, but people decided it would be good fun to race them, so they’re still made today.
The race begins at a place called Alpiglen, which is one stop down from Scheidegg on the other side of the mountain. When we arrive there’s a big party going on.
We walk down to the start. It’s all taken seriously with electronic timing just like we use for ski racing. Sorry about the quality of the pictures it’s been snowing all day.
The sleds fly along.
These guys have built an enormous sled. It will carry 12 of them down the course, and it’s fitted with air horns that play Dixie!
Yesterday’s snowfall lasted most of the night. Plough working outside our house just before dark.
This morning we headed up the hill. Great snow and very few people about.
Even the restaurants were empty. There would normally be masses of skis on this rack.
We enjoyed some brightness early on, but it didn’t last and we soon descended into the shelter of the valley runs above Grindelwald.
