Snow

Up early as usual, and it’s a gloomy day. Up at Scheidegg it was snowing, but we had a good run down to Brandegg for coffee before returning to the village for the Pool Race. This event involves skiing down a steep slope and attempting to cross a large pool of water. Good night out last night with Colin and Steve playing at the Crystal Bar.

Eclipse of the sun

Another lovely day, and we’ve been joined by Edmond and Angela who are here for a few days. Nice dinner in Sina’s restaurant last night (pic). Up early this morning for a ski at Mannlichen, Hayley properly bombing about everywhere now – even skied ‘Meltdown Hill’ with style and elegance. Quite a few pics today of a really good blast down to a place called Holenstein. Tried to get a pic of the eclipse but it didn’t really work. The eclipse did improve the snow however, as the pistes got a lot firmer while the moon partially obscured the sun.

Mannlichen to Scheidegg

All aboard the 9am cable car up to Mannlichen at 2225 metres. Today we are joined by Adrian, Steve and Shaun who arrived last night. One or two sore heads following Ronald’s hospitality in the Tanne bar yesterday evening. We start with a coffee, then make our way round to Scheidegg where we have cake. Another warm, sunny day.

Murren

Weather looked quite promising today, so it’s up early and off to Murren on the other side of the valley. Takes about 45 minutes via train & cable car. Murren’s mountains have a tendency to the vertical, but Hayley’s skiing well so no worries on that score.

We had a really good ski and beers in the sunshine at Winteregg at the end of the day. St Patrick’s day today, so this evening should be something of a gala.

Christmas

Christmas dinner with Beanie and Sandro, and the kids last night. Proper chicken and everything!

This morning we went for our (now traditional) Christmas Day walk from Grutchalp to Winteregg, where we had a lovely lunch. Today looks like being the last sunny day for a while so quite a few people were doing this. The walk meanders through the woods, gaining about 100 metres of altitude along the way.

Wengen in the sunshine across the valley. Clouds rolling in from the north – we have been promised a white Chistmas.

A last view of the summit of the Eiger before the oncoming storm ruins the views.
