We had a great night out yesterday, beers in Rocks, then a lovely dinner round at Angela’s. Couldn’t resist popping back into Rocks on the way home for a cocktail. This one is ‘smoked’ after it is mixed. It’s a nice taste.
Val was off to work early this morning. No sun at Scheidegg until about midday, but it’s still beautiful.
This evening we had a quiet evening with a Sherlock Holmes film.
We had our usual Sunday at the Sunstar last night, and while we were listening to the music, a storm was brewing outside. We had some snow, and the wind began to blow. This morning the snow had stopped, and it looks like a nice day.
However, up at the top it’s still very windy, and the cable car to Männlichen cannot run. The skiers have to turn around and make their way to the station to catch the train up to Scheidegg.
Things settled down around lunchtime, and normal service was restored. Rocks later, followed by dinner at Angela’s.
Day 3 of recuperation from my eye op, and we can have a trip out today. We’re off to Grindelwald. For the past two months the village has been almost permanently in the shade, but in early February the sun gets high enough to warm things up a little.
I need a new jacket. Nothing special, just for wearing to the pub. I found one that would have been just the job, except that the colours were deadly dull. I bet the manufacturer makes the same thing in brighter hues. I’ll check later and see whether I can track one down.
The old railway line from Lauterbrunnen used to run by the side of our house. These days nothing but the trackbed remains, but intrepid skiers can use it to climb up to the village on touring skis (touring skis can go uphill as well as down). As luck would have it, our old mate Roger came past this afternoon.
My days are dominated by eye-drops. I have to administer a total of 12 every day, and there are 3 different types. It’s a struggle to fit them all in if we spend a lot of time away from the house, but I’m sure I can squeeze them in around a trip to the pub later.
It snowed on and off all night, and we needed to be out before 6.30 this morning to catch the train down to Interlaken. It was snowing, and blowing a hooley. Not a soul around.
The train was a little late, what with all the snow, and Val went for coffee while I wandered down to the clinic for my check-up. Apparently all is well with my eye, and the awkward eye-shield that I was wearing yesterday has been removed – hurrah!
We spent the afternoon watching the Great Britain curlers beat Sweden in the Olympics. Happy days.
The snow that started yesterday continued all night, and this morning there was more than a foot of the stuff covering the village. We were woken at about 5am by Council workers trying to clear the paths before people start going to work, or skiing.
I didn’t mind being woken up, as I need to be in Interlaken very early for my first lens replacement operation. The walk up to the village was very entertaining, through huge snowdrifts. Val followed me down to the valley a few trains later. The trains were still having to clear the tracks every trip.
Anyhow, somehow I got to the eye clinic on time. The lens that I was born with was removed from my left eye, and in its place a new high tech plastic lens was implanted. It will last for the rest of my life.
It’s going to snow again tonight, heavier and more prolonged than last night, and tomorrow I need to be back at the clinic for a check-up. My appointment is an hour earlier than my surgery was this morning, so I need to be out well before the council workers start clearing the paths. Wish me luck.
It was snowing a little when we got up this morning, but not enough to deter us from popping up to the village for shopping. By lunchtime it was getting a bit heavier. Val had to venture out to make a delivery to a neighbouring chalet.
The snow continued to intensify, and now it’s a full-on storm. The wind is whistling down the chimney and we can barely see to the end of the garden path.
These pages may be a little quiet for the next few weeks, as I am finally, after 6 months of tests and trials, having some surgery to sort out my ageing eyes.
