Mixology

Rock bar has had a makeover, and the emphasis is now on elaborate cocktails. They’re certainly selling well.

Justin is making a ‘Smoke on the berry’ cocktail for Henri. After he has mixed the drink, he places it in a glass chamber, which is then filled with smoke.

I tried a bit, and it was pretty good. You can certainly taste the smoke. I think I’ll stick to my beer though.

Best news ever

Since we arrived on Monday we’ve been in quarantine, as the U.K. is considered a virus hot-spot. This was due to continue until next Thursday, but this afternoon the Swiss announced that quarantine has been scrapped, so we’re free. Yay! We just need a rapid test, so we pop up to the village. The snow cannons are roaring, and the cable car is being tested.

We’ll be off to the pub later, needless to say.

Back in the mountains

We arrived back in Wengen yesterday afternoon, after a mercifully uneventful journey from the U.K. Our aircraft was largely empty, with maybe 30 passengers flying to Zurich. Snowbound Warwickshire, just after takeoff.

Zurich airport was deserted, and we were through passport control and onto the train in just a few minutes. There’s been a lot of snow in Switzerland, and when we arrived home we found that Ali had done a grand job of opening up the house and firing up the central heating – very cosy.

This morning it’s a bit gloomy, and Val managed to get a photo before the snow started again.

Packing

We’re off to the U.K. tomorrow, so today has been spent packing, getting tested and all the other stuff you need to do to travel these days. We popped over to Ali’s to print everything out, and later we’ll all be off to Rocks. With a bit of luck, this time tomorrow we’ll be back in Shifnal, so tune-in again at the end of November when we return.

Party time

Colin has recorded some music. A single called ‘Suzie’.

And a 4 track EP called ‘The big river’.

These are available on all the major streaming platforms – Amazon, iTunes, Spotify etc, so if you have a subscription, search for Colin Flint and you’ll find the tracks. If you don’t have a subscription, you can listen free on ReverbNation – click here.

Colin’s new found fame is worth celebrating, so we had a party in Rocks last night.

Aneta came dressed as Harry Potter. Here she is with Emily, playing wizards.

We ordered a big stack of pizzas from Sina’s, and a good time was had by all.

The Apple fritter walk

Today’s walk starts at Holenstein. The theme is apples.

The walk descends, and down here it’s still warm enough for cattle to graze.

The reward for completing this walk is usually apple fritters, served at the quaint little restaurant at Brandegg. Unfortunately it’s been demolished, and a bigger, and doubtless more expensive restaurant is taking its place.

A train arrives and takes us up to a deserted Kleine Scheidegg. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so quiet.

As the Eiger has appeared in most of the photos today, here’s a handy guide should you wish to climb the north face.

Rocks is usually closed on Tuesday, but tonight we have the keys and we’re having a bit of a party.

Return of the cows

Summer is at an end, and the cows that produced all the cheese that we saw yesterday, are coming down from the high pastures. Here they come.

Many of the cows are dressed-up, and the cowherds wear traditional clothing.

The cows do a complete lap of the village, and dozens of people turn out to see them.

The cattle will return to their farms and smallholdings for the winter. We’ll see them again in late spring.
