It’s still raining, so here’s another waterfall picture.
Yesterday evening we had a trip down to Interlaken. There’s a new Spanish restaurant that we haven’t tried yet, so we thought we’d pay it a visit. Here we are with Will and his mum Amanda, and the restaurant owner who wanted to be in the photo.
I’m hoping there might be a dry spell this afternoon so I can go for a run. Fingers crossed.
It started raining after dinner last night, and it hasn’t stopped since. The wet weather won’t have any effect on us today, as Val is off to the gym and I need to buy beer. An upside of this weather is that the waterfalls in the valley are absolutely spectacular at the moment.
The Crystal bar closed for holidays yesterday, but the good news is that the Anonym bar in the hotel Silberhorn has opened, so maybe, weather permitting, we’ll pay it a visit later.
It’s time to continue our tour around lake Brienz. Today we started at a place called Giessbach. Giessbach is home to a grand hotel and a series of waterfalls. A few pictures.
Our walk takes us back down towards the lake. Lots of beehives.
Glimpses of Brienz, our destination.
Eventually we reached the lake, and we had our sandwiches on a picnic bench. A good walk on a warm day.
Today we want to continue our lap of lake Brienz. The Swiss weather forecast says there’ll be a thunderstorm at 3pm, and the BBC say midday. The weather looks nice enough, so we decide to go anyway. We begin at Oberried.
As usual, our walk begins with a climb into the forest above the lake. Wood from the forest is an important resource here, and there’s a lot of it alongside our path.
Big, and somewhat scary suspension bridge over a deep ravine. We didn’t cross it, but opted to take another route back down to the lake shore.
Eventually we arrived at the outskirts of Brienz.
There are some very old buildings here – it’s an attractive little town.
We missed the boat by a few minutes, but we wanted to buy ice creams anyway, and 10 minutes later a train arrived to take us back to Interlaken. We needn’t have worried about the rain – all the forecasts were wrong.
So that’s the whole north shore of the lake completed. We’ll make a start on the southern shore next week.
There’s a full moon tomorrow night, but last night was very clear so I thought I might get a decent photo. At this time of year there’s still a lot of snow high up, so the moon provides enough light, even after dark. I put my phone on the balcony rail, and hoped for the best.
I was quite pleased with the result. This morning Val had her German class and I went for a run. Later we’re heading down to Interlaken to meet Will for a beer, and doubtless we’ll end up having a curry somewhere.
Last summer we did a lot of walking around Lake Thun. Our aim is to link these walks until eventually we’ve walked all the way around. Today is a glorious day for a hike, but there are no trains along Lake Thun at the moment, so we may as well make a start on Lake Brienz instead. We get the train to a village called Oberried. It’s pretty cute.
We knew we’d have to climb to find the path, and unfortunately we went a bit wrong by climbing too high.
We were soon back on track. Nice views down to the village.
We’re heading for the village of Ringgenberg. It’s about 2 hours walking.
Eventually we reach our destination, and a bus picks us up and takes us back to Interlaken. A nice walk.
