Snow

Yesterday’s fog was still here this morning, but at lunchtime it started to snow. We had a quick trip up to the village for supplies, and returned home before the snow got too heavy.

Our oven, which has been used a lot lately what with all the steaks, pies etc, is getting a bit smelly. I’ve cleaned it which helped, but I noticed that the door seal had perished and was hanging off. The postman delivered the new seal today, so that was my job for this afternoon.

Nebelmeer

In German, ‘nebel’ means ‘cloud’, or ‘fog’, and ‘meer’ means ‘sea’. Today, we have a sea of cloud. In the village we have thick fog. I caught the cable car up to Männlichen. About 100 metres from the top, we emerged into sunshine, and everyone in the gondola shouted ‘yay’!

It’s busy up here, and mighty cold, but the views when we have a nebelmeer are stunning.

Not so much fog on the way down to Grindelwald.

The kids’ area outside Männlichen restaurant, and the Eiger.

Pie night

Yesterday was 24 hours of fog – hence no photos. On a brighter note, our online butcher has delivered again, so last night we had these delicious pies.

Afterwards we played Yahtzee. I had an amazing run of luck – here’s my very first throw.

Despite my good fortune, Ali still managed to pip me to the post in first place.

This morning it was snowing, and there’s a gang working on the railway at the top of our path.

The gloomy weather continued all day, but we weren’t planning much anyway.

Deserted Interlaken

It snowed yesterday evening, but this morning the sun’s out. We’re off to Interlaken for shopping.

When our train arrived I was surprised to see so few people at the station. It was the same story in the Co-op.

I wonder where everyone has gone. Anyhow, we found some scallops at half price, so they’ll make a nice starter later.

Kids

Yesterday afternoon the trains up to the village were packed with arriving families. The weather’s not great today, but the kids want to go skiing. Beginners in the snow garden.

And the children who can already ski are having a race.

The weather up the mountain has been pretty awful all day, and now the wind is howling and snow is falling. It’s nice to be tucked up indoors.

Sandstorm

A southerly wind called the Sirocco is blowing. It comes all the way from the Sahara desert, and it brings sand. Ali got this pic this morning.

It’s the same all over the Alps. This is Verbier in western Switzerland.

And Briançon in the French alps.

As long as it’s not raining, the sand just blows through. If it does rain though, we’ll be covered in it.

Cloudy

Overcast today, but still very mild. We’ve been wearing crampons on our shoes since Christmas, but at last we can do without them. The trains are busy with people arriving for the school holidays. Val got a nice shot of the village yesterday evening.

Breaking news! The Indian restaurant is open. OK it’s just for takeaways, but what great news!
