Who to believe?

According to the BBC, this morning was going to be glorious. The Swiss forecast said the complete opposite. In the event it looked ok when we woke up, so off to Scheidegg we went. Amazing views from Eigergletcher.

All of the runs from here are pretty steep. This one is called Black Rock, after the outcrop at the top left of the photo. That’s the Eiger glacier behind us.

We did quite a bit of skiing before we found ourselves at the top of the Lauberhorn in a bank of fog.

The weather was obviously changing, so we scooted down to Brandegg and caught the train home.

More fog

Last night we went down to the Three Tells pub in Matten for dinner. There are no tourists at this time of year, but it was still reasonably busy.

I fancied the sharing combo for 2, but there was no-one to share with, as Val wanted ribs and Ali & Colin fancied burgers. Not to worry, I’ll have it anyway.

It’s a big pile of squid, wings, onion rings and chips, with a bowl of roast camembert for dipping. Very nice too.

We’d made arrangements for skiing today, but this morning the fog had returned, so we gave up on that. We retrieved our skis from Central Sport where they’ve been having their end of season service, and went to the station to buy our summer passes.

Pottering

The weather forecast wasn’t great for today, but we decided to go up on the off-chance we might get a few runs before the snow arrives. It was well worth it, we had a lovely run down Wixi early on.

Stopped for coffee and a snack at the little chalet at the top of the Arven lift. Delicious!

The light began to deteriorate, so we pottered down to Brandegg on surprisingly good snow. The snow started just as our train pulled out of the station at Scheidegg. A short day, but we made the most of it.

Let’s go skiing

The sun has returned at last, so up we go. At Scheidegg the stage for the Snowpenair concert is still being dismantled, so we have to dodge the piste machines.

We bumped into Matt and Rich at Eigergletcher. Rich is skiing the old fashioned way, with telemark skis and a single long pole.

At the bottom of Black Rock, with the Mönch looming over us.

Chairlift selfie on the way up the Eigernordwand lift.

Great day out.

Off to see the frogs

Behind the little hydro station at Stechelberg is a curated garden with a couple of ponds. As we’re on the valley floor here these ponds will be the first to have tadpoles and later on, frogs. The cold weather we’ve been having lately means no tadpoles yet, and all we saw was lots of frogspawn.

There are other signs of spring down here though. These cows are getting some fresh air.

Lost tourists having a sat-nav trauma being rescued by the police. This happens a lot – they drive onto a walking path only to find it becomes impassable.

Easter is coming. Lovely display at one of the farms along the path.

A good walk of 7 or 8 kilometres, depending whether you believe Val’s watch or mine.

Party time

Closing party at the Caprice last night, and it turned out to be one of the best of the season. A few photos.

This morning it’s grey with low cloud. The kids are having a parallel slalom competition on the nursery slope.

A quiet day for us after last night’s excitement.
