Avoiding the crowds

Stunning ‘pink Jungfrau’ last night.

It’s the Snowpenair concert up at Scheidegg today. 10,000 people will be there.

Tickets are expensive and we’ve seen it all before, so it’s a good day for a trip down to Interlaken. We need food and Colin needs screws for the studio he’s building downstairs. We pause for ice cream on the Hohematt.

Tonight the Caprice has its closing party.

The sun’s out

The plough finally arrived to clear the path up to our house late yesterday afternoon. Hooray!

By the time we got back from Rocks the snow had come to an end. The street lights illuminate our winter wonderland.

This morning absolutely everyone headed up the hill to Scheidegg. It was glorious, with unbroken sunshine and over a metre of new snow.

A pause on the racetrack on the way back to Wengen. This is just above the big ‘Hundschopf’ jump.

We ski round Canadian Corner and down through the Kernan ‘S’ until we reach the tunnel under the railway at Wasserstation.

Splendid snowman on the Eigerhübel.

Snow

It started snowing at around six last night. It wasn’t much at first, so our walk up to the Caprice to see Uptown Lights was relatively unimpeded. This morning however we awoke to more than a foot of snow. It’s time to get the shovel out.

Scenes around the village. The roads were cleared earlier, but the snow continues.

The trains in the valley have been replaced by busses while the railway workers try to sort out the chaos. Fortunately there are very few guests at this time of year, so people won’t be overly inconvenienced.

Storm coming

The weather forecast is awful, and high winds have closed most of the ski lifts up at Scheidegg. Nevertheless it looks ok down here, so after lunch we set off on a walk. No snow at all below the village.

We follow the path path along the side of the valley towards the hamlet of Wengwald. As we walk the wind begins to whistle through the forest. It’s nice to see the train coming up the hill to pick us up.

Mürren

It’s a bit cloudy, but not a bad day, so we’re off to Mürren. It’s very quiet and we seem to have the mountain to ourselves. Today we have Arwyn, Laura, Ali and Ibe.

Coffee at Sonnenberg.

And beers on the Eiger terrace once we’d finished skiing.

Schilthorn

We’re being tourists today, with a visit to the Schilthorn on the other side of the valley. This is the location for the 1969 James Bond production ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, and the whole place is given over to the film.

We begin with the James Bond brunch, which is a very good all-you-can-eat buffet with Prosecco. Val and Ibe.

The restaurant revolves, so the views are ever changing.

There’s a museum with lots of artefacts from the film. including this helicopter.

And a bobsleigh.

Once we’d had enough of Mr Bond we descended to Birg on the cable car. More great views of our side of the valley from here.

And back up to the Schilthorn.

There’s a cliff walk here which is way too scary for me, but Ali got a good snap of Ibe trying to look casual half way round.

Another cable car took us back to Mürren, while Colin skied down. We had a beer at Winteregg before catching the train back to Wengen.

Out like a lamb

March began with a storm, but today the weather is warm and sunny. That means it must be time for the first barbecue of the year. Sandro stokes up the fire.

A few drinks in the sunshine.

Kids enjoying the swings in the garden.

It’s not windy enough to fly a kite, but if you run fast enough it might just work.

A lovely afternoon, in the garden with the best views in the world.
