Alpine Combination

Today’s race is a Combination. We have a slalom in the morning and a downhill after lunch. Lowest combined total time wins the race. The air show was very good.

Packed grandstand, lots of kids.

And a view of the steep drop down to the finish line.

Austrian Marco Schwarz was the winner, followed by Victor Muffat-Jeandet and Alexis Pinturault, both from France.

Lauberhorn races

It was grey and murky when we woke up this morning, and it snowed all afternoon. It’s the Lauberhorn races this weekend, and so tonight we had the bib draw for tomorrow’s Alpine Combination event. Plenty of people around already.

That stage is about 30 metres from our house. It’s going to be a noisy weekend.

Lots of skiing

It’s another nice day. We met Ali and headed up to Männlichen.

Had a good ski, then made our way across to Gummi and down Tschuggen to Aspen, where we had lunch. Colin arrived at about the same time.

Skied down to Grund, then got the train up to Scheidegg and skied home, pausing only for a beer in the sunshine at the Figeller bar. Great day.

Sunshine

It’s been snowing for three days, but this morning we awoke to glorious sunshine. Off we go up to Männlichen. It’s a beautiful day.

Here’s Val, cruising down to Holenstein.

The pistes are soft and quite bumpy, so we got a good workout. Wengen looks fantastic in the afternoon sunshine.

More snow

Another victory in the quiz last night. It’s really popular this winter – just about everyone in the bar took part.

This morning it was snowing again, with no transport of any kind up the mountain. We popped down to Interlaken for a look around the sports shops, but came back empty handed. Duo Centrale at the Sunstar later.

Frau Holle comes to Wengen

Frau Holle lives somewhere above the Earth. When she makes her bed, loose feathers are stirred up and fall to Earth as snow. So goes the tale from the brothers Grimm. It started snowing while we were in the pub last night and it hasn’t stopped since. We needed shopping so we ventured out this morning.

At 10.30 the trains up to Scheidegg were suspended owing to fears of avalanches.

And at 2pm the entire mountain was closed. The fire brigade put out an appeal via Facebook for residents to clear the snow around hydrants.

The snow looks set to continue for at least another 24 hours.

Strange day

Odd sort of a day today. Started very cloudy with fog. We grabbed our skis and popped over to Winteregg in search of better visibility, but to no avail. Then, after lunch, just when everyone had given up, the sun came out for a couple of hours.

We had a good snowfall last night, and it looks like there could be lots more to come over the next couple of days. Time to batten down the hatches.
