Healthy eating

Day 3 of my running programme today, it’s warm and sunny. I get through the routines a little more quickly than I managed on Wednesday, but it’s still tough, and a muscle in my left thigh is beginning to protest. It has until Monday to sort itself out before I start week 2.

Healthy lunch of a chicken breast and some salad.

C25K, day 2

Another instalment of Couch to 5K this morning, accompanied by Ken Bruce on the radio and of course my trusty trainer Michael. It’s quite cool today which made things a little easier – I had enough breath to say Good Morning to the guys doing the road works down at Upton Cross.

I’m enjoying this, and I wonder how much more difficult it will be up at 4000 feet when we get back to Wengen next month.

Running with Michael Johnson

It’s day one of the ‘Couch to 5K’ programme. The aim of this is to get me from zero exercise to being able to run 5 kilometres, all in just 8 weeks. This being 2018, the programme comes with an app which lets you choose your own personal trainer. Having decided to undertake this challenge whilst in the pub last night I was somewhat surprised to find myself running up the street with Michael Johnson speaking words of encouragement in my ears.

It was a good workout and it took me at least an hour to recover. Now I have to take a day off before the next instalment.

Out with the old…

And in with the new. It’s a big day here in Wengen. Kids have been allowed out of school to watch.

The old cable cars are taken away by a huge helicopter.

And here come the new ones.

The whole village turns out to watch. Carnival atmosphere.

I’m glad we had time to see that, now we need to catch the 11.33 train which begins our journey back to the UK.

Lovely day

It’s a beautiful day in the Bernese Oberland.

We popped round to Jana and Andy’s new place for coffee and cake. The views are incredible.

Jolly afternoon with Oskar and the soon to be Jankes (they’re getting married next week).

Oskar has decided he’s a table tennis player.

In between seasons

The mild weather over the past few days has melted almost all the snow in the village. The tennis courts are visible for the first time since we arrived at the beginning of December.

We pop into the station to buy our summer passes which last until the end of November. Most of the shops are closed now, and the village is eerily quiet.

Now that Rocks is closed our volume of recycling seems to have shot up. It’s good news for the Co-op I guess.

Last day of skiing

After all the excitement with the helicopter yesterday morning we got the train down to Zweilütchinen and walked back up to Lauterbrunnen. The path will need quite a lot of work before the summer season begins. Alongside the weir a landslip has blocked the path and demolished the fence.

Rocks was open for its final time last night, which meant cheap beer and lots of nibbles.

Today is the last day for skiing. We went up and did a circuit around Scheidegg and stopped at the Eigernordwand for coffee.

On the way back to Wengen there’s a huge amount of avalanche debris alongside the walking path.
