Spring is in the air

The weather keeps getting a bit warmer each day, and people were enjoying their coffee on restaurant terraces this morning. The interior of the Crystal bar was deserted.

The mild weather up here is in contrast to that down in the valley, where the cold, damp air is trapped.

It’s certainly very nice weather for Val and her group of kids up at Scheidegg. Here in Wengen, something is missing. We haven’t heard the church bells for a few days. The church steeple needs to be renovated.

The clock has been stopped at 12.00, and the bells are silent. Colin and Nev will be providing the entertainment at the Braunbaer later this evening.

Gloomy, busy

Not much to report today; Val was away early for work, while I attended to the domestics. The Co-op was a bit of a nightmare, full of holidaymakers trying to work out how the self-checkouts work. The weather’s mild but overcast, not very good for skiing and certainly no good for our solar roof. Just as the sun was setting a few rays managed to get through the clouds. The Jungfrau often displays some nice colours on days like this.

And here’s another that I took over the weekend but forgot to post.

Uptown Lights at the Braunbaer tonight. Val says that she spotted our Staffordshire buddies Jeanne and Robert at Scheidegg today, but I have no photos to verify this.

Good night out

Yesterday evening we met Helen, Adrian, Lesley and Dave for a few drinks in Rocks. It’s the busiest week of the season, so earlier this week I reserved a table at the Eiger for dinner. It was really busy, but we had a lovely meal.

Afterwards we had a wander down the street looking for a bar for some cocktails. Tanne and Crystal were both packed, but we got a nice table by the fire at the Braunbaer.

Barman Ollie has a little blowtorch for igniting our shots.

Today has seen more and more visitors arriving. Every single train is packed with holidaymakers, and Wengen is full to bursting with families. The kids all need skiing lessons, so Val will be starting work again tomorrow. The good news is that the sun is shining and the weather forecast predicts at least a week of fine, dry weather.

Home improvements

Yesterday’s snow continued all night, finally petering out just after lunch. We weren’t bothered as we were waiting for the electricians to arrive to fit some new lights. There was world championship ski racing on the telly which distracted them somewhat, but they worked quickly and did a nice job.

Now we have this very elegant wooden up/downlighter hanging from the ceiling above the dining table.

They installed a similar unit on the ceiling in the hallway, and it was a nice surprise to find that I didn’t need to install an app on my phone to control everything. Tonight we have a table booked at the Eiger, so we’re looking forward to something nice to eat.

Poor weather

The weather’s been awful this week. We’ve had fog, rain and now snow. It’s a shame, as Adrian and Helen are here for a few days. Anyhow, we can still enjoy ourselves in the evening, and last night Colin and Nev put on a good show at the Braunbaer.

Mike C brought a special guest along. Meet Millie.

Tonight we have to decide whether to venture out in the snow. It’s not a particularly tempting prospect at the moment.

Lazy Sunday

Yesterday’s storm has gone, and today it’s a bit cloudy but bright, with some spells of sunshine. For the next few weeks Wengen will be overrun by schoolchildren on holiday, and they’ll all need skiing lessons. The village nursery slopes are in perfect condition, and Val’s diary is rapidly filling up with lessons.

We had our usual Sunday stroll around the village this afternoon. Most of the paths are free of snow and ice now, and it feels like spring is on its way. Beves and Ibe, aka Uptown Lights, will be playing at the Braunbaer tonight.

Storm

The bad weather that was due to arrive yesterday has finally put in an appearance. It’s quite bright in the village, but the big cloud above Kleine Scheidegg is a sure sign that things are a bit wild up there.

All the ski lifts at Scheidegg were closed, but we weren’t particularly bothered as we’re off to Interlaken. Every so often we visit a supermarket called Migros. Compared to the Co-op it is distinctly upmarket, and we can get things there that the Co-op doesn’t stock. Their chocolate selection is particularly good. On the way back to Wengen the trains were packed – the German school holidays have started and thousands of families are heading for the mountains.
