Walk to Alpiglen

A nice day was forecast today, but by the time we got to Männlichen it had started to rain. We set off anyway, more in hope than expectation of an improvement. It did brighten up eventually.

We reached Alpiglen in good time and caught the train up to Scheidegg. There was time for a quick trip up to Eigergletscher for coffee. A storm was raging up there, and we were glad to head back to Wengen.

Mürren

Popped across the valley to Mürren today. Fantastic weather, lovely views.

Information about the surrounding mountains as we walk.

There are still a few cattle up here, but they’ll all be back in the valley by the weekend.

A nice day out. Colin and Steve are playing at the Alpine Hotel later.

Visitors

Elaine and Paul are here for the week. Time to go sightseeing. First stop, Giessbach waterfalls.

The grand hotel, viewed from behind the waterfall.

Back to Interlaken on the steamer. The Koreans are still visiting the little jetty at Iseltwald.

We returned to Wengen via Männlichen. Paul has a new friend.

Dinner at the Eiger tonight.

Sunday stroll

It’s a pleasant morning, warm, with a little high cloud. There’s time for a walk before lunch, so we head for the farming hamlet of Ledi, which is above the village. Great views up to the end of our valley.

Autumn is definitely here now, and although the blooms on the geraniums are getting a bit thin, they still add a splash of colour to the old chalets.

A very nice walk, and we hardly saw another soul.

Neuhaus

Emily cooked a lovely fish pie last night, and later on Val beat everyone at Yahtzee.

This afternoon we popped down to Neuhaus, which is on Lake Thun. Neuhaus is nothing more than a small harbour and a restaurant, but it’s picturesque and very popular.

The steamer from Interlaken calls regularly.

There was dinghy racing on the lake this afternoon. These small 12 foot boats were quite a handful as the breeze got up.

A nice afternoon out, and we got home before the rain came.

Here come the cows

Autumn will soon be here, so it’s time for the first of the cows to come down from the high pastures. The main street in Lauterbrunnen is closed, and the pavements are lined with sightseers.

This herd has spent the summer up at Pletschenalp, which is on the opposite side of the valley from us. Some of the headdresses are quite elaborate.

And off they go. It’s a hugely popular event, and we were lucky to find a table for lunch at the Hotel Oberland.

Not long afterwards the first heavy rain shower arrived. Nice timing for the cows.
