More racing

The weather’s much better today, and we’re off to see the slalom. Packed stadium.

Great view of the course. Slalom is a much better spectator sport than downhill.

Everyone has a flag to wave as the competitors approach the finish. Our boy Dave Ryding came 12th, beating all the Swiss racers in the process.

After the race the spectators all catch the train down to Lauterbrunnen, and the village will return to normal. Sunday night is quiz night.

Too much snow

It snowed all night, and this morning the council had to dig the village out.

There’s 18 inches of new snow on the race course. The racers reach speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, and they need a hard, icy surface. It’s just not safe with so much soft snow, so regrettably the race is cancelled.

No race doesn’t mean no party, so the festivities start early. These girls are part of a huge brass band.

And here’s the whole band playing.

Slalom tomorrow, featuring Dave Ryding from Manchester.

Racing

Lots of fresh snow this morning and we’re off to see the race. It’s tricky getting photos of the skiers, but here’s Andreas Zampa from Slovakia coming down the hill. We came down on the train with him and his brother Adam a couple of days ago.

Carnival atmosphere in the stadium – it’s just a huge party.

Niels Hintermann from Hausen won the race. A Swiss winner is yet another excuse for a party tonight.

Lauberhorn weekend

Gloomy today, popped up for a quick ski after lunch. At Holenstein.

Swiss kids get days out learning to ski in January.

The Lauberhorn races start tomorrow, so tonight the racers draw their start numbers for the Supercombination.

One of the nice things about competitive skiing is that you can meet and have a chat with your heroes. Here’s Carlo Janka (Switzerland):

And Dominik Paris  (Italy)

Sunshine for the racers

We ran into Beanie and Aliena on the train. They got out at Allmend to go tobogganing.

At the top it’s a beautiful morning, very few people around. The snow is perfect.

No queuing at all.

At the top of the Lauberhorn the racers are doing their training runs. They are not allowed to race if they don’t complete these.

It clouded over later, and we’re expecting a little more snow tonight.

Cool for cats

Most of the time it’s a good life being a cat in Wengen  – no cars, lots of birds to chase. But if your owners live on the first floor and you rely on a precarious cat ladder to get home things get a bit tough when it snows. Here’s Rudi from next door struggling home this evening.

Right now we’re in Rocks and there’s a party going on. Everyone’s looking forward to skiing on the new snow tomorrow.

Lovely day

Beautiful day up the mountain, glorious sunshine and wonderful views.

We stayed out until the sun went over the hill. Last run down was a bit gloomy, but we have the mountain to ourselves.

Looking north the lowlands are covered in fog. Looks like the weather will change tomorrow.
