Rain, rain, rain

The day started well enough, and we popped up to the shops for a few bits. After lunch however, things went downhill fast, with gusty winds, rain and a few claps of thunder. We’re off out to dinner in Lauterbrunnen later, so fingers crossed that it dries up in time for our walk to the station.

Home brew

Last night we had a walk up to the village after dinner. Amazing view of the Jungfrau from just above the house.

The Caprice had reopened, so we popped in to say hello. Andy the manager has been busy during the lockdown. He has brewed beer and made gin from daisies. The beer was very good, as was the gin according to Ali.

Today we had a quick trip to Interlaken to pick up a coffee table for the balcony, and I barbecued some burgers for dinner.

Busy Bank holiday

Last night I cooked lots of tapas. My Spanish omelette made from rösti and half a dozen eggs turned out ok.

Ascension day is a bank holiday here, so it’s going to be very busy in the valley. Instead we go up to Mürren. It’s a lovely day.

The path from Mürren back to Grütschalp is my favourite place to run.

Our plan to have a beer in Lauterbrunnen came to nothing – there wasn’t a single free table on any of the terraces. Not to worry, we’ll pop out for one after dinner.

Room with a view

We’ll, not so much a room, but our living room balcony. We bought some binoculars a few weeks ago, and they’re really good, but they need a very sturdy tripod. It arrived today.

Our next flight back to the UK has been cancelled, that makes a total of five cancellations so far. I called Swiss today and rebooked, but I’m not holding out much hope. Anyway, it’s nice here.

It’s my turn to cook tonight, so I’m going to see whether I can turn a Swiss rösti into a Spanish omelette. What could possibly go wrong?

More tadpoles

It’s a lovely summer’s day. Off to see the tadpoles. We grab a sausage roll from the bakery at Lauterbrunnen and hop on the bus to Stechelberg. The tadpoles are all still there in the ponds.

Val and Ali walked along the valley back to Lauterbrunnen, while I ran. It’s getting a bit warm down here now, might need to go a bit higher for the next one.

Zweilütschinen

This afternoon we caught the train down to Lauterbrunnen and set off along the river down the valley. We pass the little hydro station, and its neighbour, the aptly named chalet Elektra.

About halfway along the path we come to the picturesque hamlet of Sandweidli. There’s no station here, and it isn’t mentioned on the timetable, but the train will stop here on request.

The water in the river is a sort of milky white, meaning it is melted glacier ice. This is bad news for the glaciers, as they shouldn’t really be melting so early in the year.

Eventually we arrive at Zweilütschinen, which literally means ‘two rivers’. The river in our valley and the one that runs down Grindelwald’s valley meet here.

Big night out

Ever since the start of lockdown, we’ve been fantasising about having a proper night out in Interlaken. Now we can have one, so we’re off to Brasserie 17 for dinner.

This place is well known for its ribs and chicken wings. They’re absolutely delicious.

The chef is our old mate Michele who used to work at the Caprice in Wengen.

Snoozing on the way home.

Today the weather’s fine and we’re off down to Lauterbrunnen. It’s really busy. New ice cream chalet.

I have to pick my way through the tourists as I come to the end of my run.
