We were convinced we’d seen the last of the snow last night – all the forecasts said it would come to an end yesterday afternoon. However, when we’d finished watching our next episode of ‘For All Mankind’ (highly recommended) I looked out of the window and it was snowing hard again.
This morning it was still snowing lightly, but once again the forecasts were optimistic, so we headed for the cable car. The birds have very little to eat when the snow is deep on the ground, so they hang around the cable car station hoping for a few crumbs.
The cable car whisked us up to Männlichen – it rises 1000 metres in just 5 minutes. At the top we couldn’t see a thing through the fog, and it was snowing hard.
Normally in this situation we’d skate across to the restaurant and have a coffee while we hope for an improvement. Today however, with the restaurant closed, low temperatures and driving snow we had little option but to return to the village. At least we tried.
Super raclette at Ali’s last night, here are the raw ingredients.
3 different cheeses, beef, pork and bacon, salad, boiled potatoes and veg. We spent hours eating, and we still couldn’t finish it all.
This morning it was still snowing. There were a few ski lifts open at Scheidegg, but no trains owing to severe avalanche danger. The snow paused after lunch and I cleared the terrace and balcony again, but the snow soon started again. It’s a day for housework.
Storm Luis is rapidly approaching, so waking up to sunshine this morning was a very pleasant surprise. We had a wander around the village after lunch. Another nice surprise came from the Gemeinde (local council), who have told us that we no longer need to wear our masks in the main streets in the village.
This afternoon the storm continues to approach, the mountains are disappearing and the wind is whistling around our chimney. Our balcony furniture is tucked away in a corner, so hopefully it’ll all still be there when the bad weather is over.
