Skiing in the sunshine

It’s a beautiful spring morning, and we’re off up the hill to Kleine Scheidegg. We have some of Switzerland’s finest sporting goods to help us enjoy the snow.

Considering the perfect weather, the ski runs were quite quiet.

Arven is one of the most popular chairlifts in the region. This morning there was no one there but us.

Colin and Steve will be playing at the Braunbaer tonight.

Spring in the mountains

We arrived back in Wengen after dark last night after an uneventful journey. When we left at the end of February the ski season was in full swing and the village was correspondingly busy with holidaymakers. This morning, in complete contrast, everywhere was quiet, and no longer do we have to queue to get to the checkouts at the Co-op.

Spring has arrived in the garden, and some of the bulbs that we planted in December are coming up. A few pictures.

If you go down to the woods today…

We’re back in England, and our diaries are packed with appointments with friends, family, and for me – dentists. It’s always nice to have a wander around Shifnal though, and some of the local wildlife is waking up from winter slumbers. This squirrel posed nicely in a shaft of sunlight beneath a tree.

Our beloved local pub Odfellows closed down a while back, and the building has now been converted into a dental practice. I booked myself in for a checkup today, and sat in my usual seat by the fire in what used to be the lounge bar but is now the dentists’ waiting room. I do miss the old pub, but it’s nice being able to walk to the dentist instead of having to drive into Telford.

Super night out

Colin and Nev played at the Braunbaer last night. We had a good crowd.

Our table was an international affair, from left to right we have Terry (Australia), Michael (USA), Tommy (Germany), Randy (Netherlands), me, Ozzy (UK), Laurie (USA) and Val. Val and Laurie always get a girly photo.

This morning Val had her German class, and I met Michael for coffee at the Crystal bar. Tomorrow we’re heading back to the UK for a family funeral. It’ll give us a welcome chance to catch up with friends and family.

Happy birthday to…. me!

Val was off down to Interlaken this afternoon for another appointment at the eye clinic. Her trip home did not go well. The train broke down at Matten. The poor holidaymakers had to drag their luggage across the tracks to wait for a replacement train.

While all this was going on I was relaxing at home. I have some birthday cards.

Val eventually got home, and we headed for Rocks. After a few drinks we walked down to the Eiger restaurant for dinner.

We had chateaubriand, which is fillet of beef served with vegetables, croquette potatoes and some lovely sauces. It doesn’t look much on the photo, but as soon as you’ve finished they bring you another plateful. We finished off the night with cocktails back in Rocks.

More signs of spring

Weekend update:

On Saturday we were joined by Jeanne and Robert for a lovely dinner in the Eiger, and I didn’t get a picture. Hope you had a good journey home!

Last night we had our usual Sunday stroll up to the Braunbaer.

Beves and Ibe provided the entertainment. There was a good crowd in.

Our bar staff My and Martina enjoy working on a Sunday evening. My is a Finnish name, pronounced Muh.

Today we’re off down to Interlaken as Val has an appointment at the eye clinic. The weather’s still very mild for February, and the first snowdrops have put in an appearance alongside the railway.

Tonight Colin will be playing at the Anonym bar.

Last day of the school holidays

It’s sunny and mild, and holidaymakers are making the most of the last day of their skiing holidays. In the UK and here in Switzerland the kids will all be returning to school next week. It’s not surprising therefore to find that everywhere is super busy. Big queue for the cable car to Männlichen.

Up at the top things are equally frantic. As well as the cable car from Wengen there’s a fast gondola lift from Grindelwald, so days like this get very crowded as this shot from the webcam shows.

Our nursery slopes are busy too. The children have skiing tests and will come home with medals.

It’s Val’s last day at work – at least for now, so we’ve made sure all the chores are done so that she can have a lazy weekend.
