Freedom

It’s Monday so I’m due a run. We pop over to Mürren. I’m free from the tyranny of my training app, so I just turn on the radio and go. It’s wonderful.

We met Paul and Hayley at Winteregg and set off up the hill. It’s pretty steep in places.

P & H have moved to another campsite in Lauterbrunnen. It’s really nice and we had beers and dinner with them.

Picnic in the pub

It’s the world cup final today, so after I cleaned the barbecue we headed to Rocks along with everyone else to watch the game.

Afterwards we had a nice meal at the bar. Colin has brought some pork pies from the U.K. Emily made brownies and we had one of Ali’s cakes left over from yesterday. Delicious!

Eiger Ultra Trail

There are a series of races this weekend. The blue ribbon event is a 101 kilometre route around our mountains. Here’s Arwyn from the Hüsi at Interlaken arriving at Männlichen.

Later on we have our own walk. Here’s me and PC on the way down to Alpiglen.

Emily and Molly are getting on well.

Busy busy

Yesterday was spent cooking. I made a big tartiflette for our barbecue party.

Alpenglow over the mountains. View from our garden.

Emily is upset that England were knocked out of the world cup. She made an England themed cake.

This morning was my final run in my Couch to 5k training programme. Lovely run along the valley.

This evening we went down to the lake to see Paul and Hayley. Mercedes-Benz were hosting a barbecue at the campsite, so we got free food. Yay!

More sunshine, and guess who’s here!

Another good run this morning. We play a game of pursuit along the valley – Val sets off with her speedy Nordic walking while I faff about sorting out the phone, headset etc. My job then is to catch her before the phone tells me that my run is over. It took me 19 minutes to overhaul her today. By the end of the run she was still less than 5 minutes behind me. Lauterbrunnen is looking good.

Later on I got a message from Paul & Hayley saying that they’d just arrived in Interlaken. They’re staying in their motorhome at Bönigen. We jump on the train and go down to see them.

After a couple of beers we set off for Wengen to watch the footie in Rocks.

Men at work

It’s a cool, cloudy day, but the forecast is dry so we make our sandwiches and head up to Männlichen. Work on the new gondola station is still in progress so the place is a construction site. On the ski pistes between here and Scheidegg more work is underway, this is for snow making. The pipes are laid in 2 metre deep trenches. At one point we have to make a diversion to get around one.

Once we pass Arven things get a bit quieter. Below about 1750 metres it’s warm enough for livestock.

Every so often we see a big scar on the mountain created by diggers. This is where the pylons will be built for the new Eiger Express lift. It’s not due to open until 2020 so there’s still plenty to do.

Eventually we reach Alpiglen, where the train picks us up for the ride home. Football again tonight.

Hot

Blazing sunshine today, and temperatures in the high twenties. The hills along the valley are less severe than the ones on the run from Mürren, but of course it’s a lot warmer down there. I decided to run from Lauterbrunnen to the Schilthornbahn. Boy was it hot, so hot in fact that there weren’t many other runners on the path. Still, I completed the run and we had lunch at the snack van before getting the bus back. We’d planned to go to Interlaken for some shopping, but instead we retreated to Wengen and the cool of our flat.
