Another storm

For the third day out of the last four, we have a storm. It’s a classic föhn, with all the lifts closed at Scheidegg, and sun and ridiculously high temperatures in the village. It was 17 degrees when we set off for our stroll. Despite all this you can still ski back to the Caprice.

Passing the Brunner at the top of the village. It’s so warm that this little girl has her ski jacket tied around her waist.

Very old houses a little further down the hill. This is the most attractive part of Wengen.

A couple of hours later the storm arrived in the village. It looks like being a rough night.

Curling

Last night’s snow had turned to rain when we woke up this morning, so the village was covered in six inches of slush. Fortunately we have an indoor activity this morning – we’re curling with Anne-Marie and Paul and their guests.

The rain continued for most of the day, and it’s still windy so some lifts were closed again. Val’s colleague Jason got this shot of Jo and her ski school group at a deserted Männlichen lift.

We spent an expensive afternoon booking flights and renewing our Swiss passes ready for the journey to the UK next month.

Fashion faux-pas, and a storm coming

Ali and I managed a ‘whoops’ last night by wearing the same tops to Rocks. Beves and Ibe in stitches of laughter of course.

The weather forecast is awful, but we meet at the appointed hour and head up to Männlichen. It doesn’t look good, with falling snow and a stiff wind.

But we stuck with it and things improved as the morning wore on. We had quite a bit of fresh snow in the early hours of this morning, so the skiing is challenging but good fun. No stopping for coffee while the sun’s out.

Eventually we succumbed to the need for caffeine and called in at the Berghaus.

A nice morning out.

Nice weather?

It’s fair to say that the weather’s been pretty dodgy for the past few days. Of course we did get a big snowfall yesterday, and the forecast for today was for blue skies and cold temperatures, which is exactly what we want. It started well enough – here are the kids from the school in Grindelwald having a race on Männlichen.

We had a good ski.

But soon the weather began to change, and the sky became overcast as the temperature rose. Gloomy below Tschuggen.

Suddenly the mountain was deserted – everyone hates poor visibility. We head for the lift and go home for lunch.

Uptown Lights in Rocks for après ski later.

Blizzard

Val and Mike ran the quiz in Rocks last night.

Winners were Fox & Badger, aka Colin and Ali. It was snowing when we left, and this morning we awoke to heavy snow and a howling gale. The Dorfstrasse, which was completely free of snow yesterday, is now skiable.

We abandoned our plan to go down to Interlaken, and stayed at home in the warm.
